Heron Park Students Visit Sussex Downs College Sports Department
On Monday 12th January a select group of children from Heron Park and Oakwood Primary Academies attended a sports coaching clinic at the Sussex Downs Sports Park. A total of 18 girls and 15 boys aged 7-11 years spent the morning receiving specialist instruction from the College’s students and staff. The morning of activities, including Basketball and Cricket, was laid on as part of the sports education development program run between Sussex Downs College and Aurora Academies Trust.
Since the start of the academic year the College’s FdA Sport Coaching and Development students have been able to put their learning into a practical environment by spending time assisting and occasionally leading sports coaching sessions at the academies. During these sessions the children collected reward stickers as part of Aurora’s “Sportitude” program for displaying positive behaviours such as teamwork, attitude and respect. Those who completed their reward collections qualified for the outing.
Mr. John Greenwood, Executive Head Teacher for Aurora said “There are many reasons why this co-operation between the College and the Academies is so positive. Foremost, that the life skills sport is able to promote in the pupils has a beneficial impact throughout the school. The students have been excellent roles models for the children and we are very grateful to Sussex Downs College for hosting such a wonderful event.”
